Reading Program

By: Florence Rankin Tifton Gazette 5/21/04

TIFTON — If it’s summer, it must be time for Accelerated Reading. The local AR program, sponsored by the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence begins Tuesday, June 1, with festivities at the reading center, 216 Tift Ave. Students, friends and teachers may earn points
— and free books for school media centers or the public library — by reading
books and taking tests during the summer.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 12:15 p.m., with refreshments and speeches by local officials. Representatives of civic clubs will be on hand to begin the annual quest for the Reading Cup, donated by the Tifton Rotary Club. The Tifton Junior Woman’s Club was last year’s winner of the cup, which goes to the civic club earning the most AR points during the summer. Children through age 18 may earn prizes by reading and can also be awarded group prizes at each school in the fall. Every point earned by students, their friends and teachers will earn 10 cents toward the purchase of AR books and tests. Each school may receive up to $1,000, depending on the
number of points earned by each group.
If 25 percent of the students at a school receive at least five AR points, the school will receive $250. If 50 percent of the faculty at the school earns at least 10 points, the total awarded goes to $600. And if 25 percent of parents and/or friends pass at least one AR test, then the school
receives the full $1,000.
“It’s going to be bigger and better than ever,” said TCFEE Executive Director Mike Brumby. “We want to encourage everybody to come out and read.”

Brumby said 4-H Club members will be helping patrons use the computers at the center, and foundation volunteers will also be at the center to welcome readers. A new “express lane” will make it easier for civic club members and other adult readers to take tests quickly.
The summer program will run for eight weeks. AR books are available at the Tifton-Tift County Public Library, where they are marked with a green dot on the spine of the book, or at the reading center.
The center will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through
July 22.
